Throwing all of your necklaces, bracelets, and earrings into one jewelry box is not a good jewelry storage solution. Necklaces and bracelets become tangled with each other, and you spend a long time separating the one you want to wear out of a nest of others, sometimes damaging jewelry in the process. When earrings lie in a pile, you cannot easily find a matching pair. Make a jewelry storage system out of materials found at a local craft store.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
* Frames
* Cork board
* Glue gun
* Pins with large circular heads (not flat-headed pins)
* Ribbon
* Scissors
* Razor-blade
* Stapler
* Ruler
* Pencil
1. Take apart a frame, removing the glass front panel and cardboard backing. Discard the glass front panel. Cut a sheet of cork board to the same dimensions as the cardboard backing, placing the cork board underneath the cardboard and cutting along the edge with a razor blade.
2. Use hot glue to attach the cork board to the cardboard, applying a line of glue around the edges of the cardboard and an “X” through the center of the cardboard and pressing the cork board onto the cardboard, aligning the two so the corners match.
3. Cut a piece of ribbon to be 2 inches longer than a shorter side of the cork board and cardboard rectangle. Orient the rectangular board so the shorter sides are at the top and bottom. Lay the ribbon horizontally across the board, one inch down from the top, wrapping the sides of the ribbon so one inch wraps around to the back of each side.
4. Use hot glue to attach the extra inches of ribbon to the back of the board, applying glue to each inch of ribbon and pressing onto the cardboard backing. For extra security, turn board right-side up and staple through the ribbon one-fourth inch in from each edge.
5. Place a ruler oriented horizontally across the board underneath the bottom of the ribbon, leaving a small gap where cork board shows through above the ruler and below the ribbon. Make small marks with a pencil one inch apart to mark where you will put the pins to hang necklaces and bracelets. The marks should be just under the bottom of the ribbon.
6. Push in the pins at the points marked on the cork board. Curve the pins upward slightly to create hooks by pushing on the ends of the pins.
7. Reassemble the frame, placing the board into the frame and securing the back panel in place behind the board. Hang earrings onto the ribbon in matching pairs. Hang necklaces and bracelets onto the pin hooks.
